All parrots love sunflower seeds. Unfortunately, these are very high in fat and therefore less suitable for our indoor birds, but their sprouts (shoots) are something special in the sprout kitchen and little known. They are, among other things, valuable suppliers of protein, iron, and energy. Sunflower sprouts contain an above-average amount of protein, which is already broken down into essential amino acids when sprouted. Furthermore, they consist of a lot of oil, which has a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acids and lecithin. These unsaturated fatty acids help to keep the blood vessels clean and nourish the brain, making thinking, learning, and remembering easier. The high concentrations of phytosterols contained in the seeds and sprouts serve as structural components in the cell membrane of plants, analogous to cholesterol in the cell membrane of animals. They belong to the secondary plant compounds, bioactive substances with health-promoting effects but without specific nutrient characteristics. To date, thousands of such phytochemicals are known. They occur relatively frequently in the plant kingdom as natural scent, aroma, color, flavor, signaling, or messenger substances and serve both the plant and humans and animals. Quinoa comes from South America, where it has been a staple food alongside amaranth for 6,000 years. It was particularly cultivated in the high plains of the Andes at altitudes above 4,000 m. The main producing countries are Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. The mustard seed-sized grains have a grain-like composition, which is why quinoa, like amaranth, is referred to as a gluten-free pseudocereal. Botanically, however, quinoa belongs to the amaranth family and is more closely related to spinach and beets. Its protein content and some minerals (especially magnesium and iron) even surpass those of common cereal grains. More than 50 percent of the fatty acids are unsaturated. Quinoa is particularly popular with South American parrot species, such as Amazons, green-cheeked conures, and violet-crowned parrots. But our African grey parrots and cockatoos also love quinoa. Amaranth is one of the oldest plants cultivated by humans. It is not a grain but a grain-like plant. Amaranth contains a variety of natural vitamins, minerals, proteins, and amino acids— all these substances are needed by a bird's body to function perfectly. Amaranth belongs to the amaranth family and is found worldwide. As far back as thousands of years ago, this plant was cultivated by the indigenous peoples of Central and South America. The seeds are utilized, which are formed in often over 1-meter-long flower spikes. The seeds are very small and light: about 1,500 seeds make only 1 gram. Amaranth had long been forgotten. Its rediscovery is due to its high nutrient content. Compared to native cereals like wheat or oats, the grain plant contains a higher protein content with better protein quality. This high proportion of essential amino acids makes amaranth an important protein source. The high iron content makes it a vital food for all birds suffering from iron deficiency. Additionally, amaranth has a high mineral content. Calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc are stored in the seeds many times more than in grains.
